The mission of the Elkhart County Vital Records office is to provide friendly, courteous, and accurate service in issuing birth and death records. This office holds records from 1882 to the present for births and deaths that have occurred in Elkhart County only. Indiana State Department of Health-Vital Records has records for persons born in the State of Indiana from October 1, 1907 to the present.
Birth certificates come in one standard size and are available for $13 each. The Apostille (or long form birth certificate) is only available by mail through the Indiana State Department of Health-Vital Records office and is authenticated by the Secretary of State.
This office also performs Genealogy searches of those who were born and/or died in Elkhart County. As the demand for genealogy information steadily increases; we strive to process the requests efficiently and as quickly as possible.
Certain changes may be made to birth records in the form of Notification letters, Amendments, Paternity Affidavits, Adoptions, or Court Orders.
Home Birth registration is also available in this office. According to Indiana Law, as of July 1, 2014, if a home birth is not registered with the Local Health Department by one (1) year of age, it is considered a delayed registration and must be filed with the Indiana State Department of Health.
