Frequently Asked Questions

Child Passenger Safety

Q:  How can I obtain a free car seat for my child?

A:  Elkhart County does not currently offer any free distribution programs for parents to obtain car seats. With funds from the Indiana Automotive Safety Program, there are currently 4 Permanent Fitting Station sites available in the county.

Q:  What is a Permanent Fitting Station?

A:  The Automotive Safety Program at Riley Hospital for Children provide funding for 82 Permanent Fitting Sations and 12 satelite sites within the state. Four Permanent Fitting Stations operate within Elkhart County to assist parents with obtaining and correctly using the appropriate car seat for their children. Appointments can be made by calling the appropriate site. Parents receive one-on-one instruction from a Certified CPS Technician in making sure everyone in the car is riding as safely as possible.

Q:  What if my seats are found to be unsafe?

A:  Car Seats may be deemed unsafe for any number of reasons including its age, crash history, compatibility with the car or the child, and whether or not the parent purchased the seat second-hand.
If during any inspection by Elkhart County technicians, a car seat is found to be unsafe, the technician will offer a replacement seat if they are available. Parents may obtain the new car seat for a small donation or at no-cost if they participate in state or federal assistance programs.

A:  During all car seat appointments, parents and caregivers need to bring the following:
